Combining form and function, French-door refrigerators come with elegant double doors that open up to an expansive fridge on the top and a freezer drawer beneath. Special features like door-to-door dispensers, ice machines with higher-end features and flex drawers that can be customized make them stand out from the crowd.

We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect, and founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the right one. They weighed storage capacity as well as layout, energy efficiency, and other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that the GE Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchens. This fridge is loaded with them all, from a Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door to a smart dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This refrigerator is costly and I expected more.

This fridge is a great choice, despite the small blip. It has a large freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French-door fridges. It also holds plenty of frozen food items compared to other models.

The fridge is equipped with 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a French-door fridge at this price. It also has a decent-sized icemaker packed into the left door, though it's not the largest I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to create a customized storage arrangement for what you want to keep. The GE PYE22PYNFS's interior design is good-looking, too. The LED lighting is an attractive touch. The storage bins in the door come with a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall objects. The drawers include temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, but I found their plastic textured coatings to be a bit hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with the full suite of features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and lets you control your refrigerator from any place around the world. It also comes with a lot of customization options. It will also send you notifications when the door is left unlocked as well as when the freezer or fridge requires defrosting, and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill, an option available in a handful of other GE refrigerators that allows you to choose how many cups of water you'd like to pour out at once. The fridge displays a countdown timer to show you how much water is left however it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen Bosch's French door refrigerator is one of a kind. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a veggie compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer periods, and two compressors for preserving food items. The ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient, and it produces the shape of a pyramid using only water. This refrigerator is the ideal choice for single household or kitchenettes who want a built-in look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

This fridge was rated the most efficient in our Refrigerators Test for several reasons. The freezer temperatures remained steady at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit and never fluctuating by more than a fraction one degree. This is crucial to preventing freezing burn. The fridge's refrigerator section also performed well, achieving the temperature that was set for the initial setting within an hour and maintaining that temperature steady over the course of our testing.

Bosch is known for its top-of-the-line appliances, so it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance that has the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. The app allows you to control and monitor your refrigerator remotely from your tablet or smartphone. The refrigerator is costly and has great features and capabilities at a fair price.

While the fridge is an incredible piece of equipment however, it is important to understand the limitations. It has a limited space for shelves, so you'll have to think creatively when storing tall objects. Also the shelves aren't completely sprillproof, and can easily be damaged or stained by sharp objects. The trays are easily removed from the fridge. However, they should be cleaned regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs a lot of storage space into an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge features a standard French-door layout with gallon-sized door bins on each door and two rows of shelves that capture spills and a set more spacious drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded in order to create more space for taller items. There's also a full-width deli drawer and an internal water dispenser.

This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker, making it simple to transfer frozen ice as needed. The freezer also has innovative design features such as sliding drawers that allow you to organize your items. It also comes with a large bin that can hold plenty of frozen food and an ice storage bin.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. It lets you control the fridge's temperature as well as lighting from your smartphone.  French Door Fridge freezer 900mm wide 's a good way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, especially if you're away from home.

But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it does not necessarily add to the overall performance of the refrigerator. The fridge took a bit longer to defrost food and chill it than other models we test. This is likely due to its bigger capacity.

Another issue with the door of this refrigerator. The handles with a sunken design allow smaller people to open them from the bottom. However taller people have a difficult time closing them without slamming them. It would have been better to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a excellent option for those looking to combine the benefits of a French-door fridge's aesthetics with a more efficient layout. Its capacity is higher than average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a bit cheaper than the most expensive counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it a desirable choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice if you want a French-door fridge that doesn't break the budget. It's a basic fridge which may not be as appealing as some of its competitors however, it does have enough features to make it a suitable option. Its most important feature, the adjustable temperature drawer helps to keep food items like vegetables and meat fresher for longer. It also has a large ice maker and a water dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is located over the two crisper bins, is another excellent feature. This drawer lets you divert part of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, so you can put away food items that require extra attention. This feature can be adjusted by using a slider located outside the drawer. You can also set the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the general settings are more effective than the specific ones.

In my tests, the refrigerator's temperatures were fairly consistent across all areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't rank among the best in our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with a smart thermometer for more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge resistant" finish. It does an excellent job of repelling fingerprints and streaks even when compared to the glossy stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
